What is Trigger Finger ?
The tendons that move the fingers are attached to the bone by ligaments. These ligaments form a sort of tunnel where the tendons slide smoothly back and forth as you move your fingers. The tendons are lubricated with a substance called tenosynovium. Due to repetitive motions such as typing or simply clicking the mouse the tendons start to thicken. Now the tendon begins to have friction against the tunnel formed by the ligaments. As a result areas in the tendon may become infected causing a rounded swelling.
What are the symptoms ?
The symptoms include pain and a clicking sound caused by the round swelling in the tendon passing through the ligament tunnels. If the swelling becomes too large the finger becomes immobilized in a flexed position. As if you where flexing your finger to shoot a gun.
What can I do to prevent Trigger Finger ?
If you have developed the round swelling in a tendon unfortunately there is very little that can be done through physical therapy. You must seek the professional advice of your doctor.
