What is tendinitis ?
Tendons are rope-like fibers that connect your muscles to your bones.
They slide easily over other muscles and bones with the help of a lubricant originating in the Bursa Sack. When the tendons experience overwork from repetitive motions like typing or the simple clicking of the mouse, can cause inflammation. This gives the tendons a narrow fit through the passageways they travel. Restricting the easy gliding motion, resulting in pain ( Tendinitis ) and eventually higher degrees of injury.
Prevention
A very common mistake in recovery is thinking the problem has appeared.
Proper steps must be taken to prevent this reoccurrence.
- Exercise and stretch the muscles around the joint daily.
- The use of proper equipment and adjustments is a must.
What equipment should I use ?
The Ergonomic Chair
The chair should have good lumbar support and the capability to adjust to your comfort seating preference. The arm rest design should be height and width adjustable. Allowing you the option to rest your arms on occasion.
Note:
Do not rest the arm for prolong periods of time. This will cause poor circulation.
There are chairs to accommodate all sorts of task requirements.
- Non intensive use (Short periods of time spent at the workstation)
- Medium intensive use (50-75% of the day at work in chair with less than half time on the computer)
- High intensive use (90-100% of the day at work in chair primarily on the computer)
Keyboard Platform
Ideally your keyboard should be at about the same height as your elbow or slightly lower. The platform should include a mouse tray to help maintain
The wrist in a neutral level position. This will also help if your are experiencing any shoulder pain. The same formula used above for seating applys.
Note:
Wresting the wrists on armrests will guarantee a cut off in blood circulation.
Monitor Height
To help avoid neck and shoulder injury the monitor should be set at eye level or just bit under. Using a monitor arm is just as important, as many wrist and arm injuries start in the neck.
