Monitor Arms - one of the best defenses against workplace injury
Ergonomics doesn't stop at keyboard arms and platforms. Adding an adjustable keyboard arm is an essential step in creating a flexible workstation, but it's the first step.
Using a monitor arm is just as important, as many wrist and arm injuries start in the neck.
How?
Keyboard arms and platforms provide the comfortable, wrist neutral position that is critical to reduce the risk of developing RSI's. However, without proper neck posture, the muscles and nerves that travel down the arms to the fingertips can get pinched. This condition, called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, causes symptoms similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, and can be just as painful.
What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
TOS is "the general term used to describe a condition caused by the compressing of the nerves and blood vessels between the neck and shoulders."1 This causes "pain in the shoulder, arm or hand, or in all three locations."2
What causes TOS?
A big factor is an improper monitor position. A monitor that is placed outside of the optimum range -slightly below eye level and 18-24" from the user - creates an awkward forward head and shoulder posture. "The...likely cause is slouching forward and dropping the shoulders; causing tension in the muscles at the side of the neck and constricting the arteries and nerves."3
Over time, the muscles and tendons that work to support the head become inflamed and compress sensitive nerves and blood vessels. Immobility, or static tension, causes the neck and shoulders to stiffen and pain moves through the arm to the elbows, wrist and fingers. While the injury did not originate in the wrist, the symptoms are the same as carpal tunnel syndrome. Different causes, same result - lost workdays
